Biography

Mae Jemison is remarkable because she was an ordinary woman who had dreams like anybody else, but she eventually made those dreams come true by becoming the first African-American woman to fly into space.  Countdown To Space, a biography about Mae Jemison, was written by Della A. Yannuzzi.  This book is about a woman who had a dream to do something extraordinary in science.   Mae Jemison had to work really hard at what she did.  It took her years before she accomplished her goal, but in the year 1992 she finally had obtained that goal.  On September 12, 1992,  7 crew members, including Jemison, climbed aboard the Endeavor space shuttle to fly into space.  Because she is a determined, brave, and independent woman, Jemison can do just about anything and that is why she is remarkable.  Whatever Jemison dreamed of doing, she could make it become a reality.
Determined is the best way to describe Jemison.  She never gave up on her goal.  If someone said she couldn’t do something, she would turn around and say, “watch me.”  She was just an ordinary girl with outrageous dreams, like any other little girl.  But what makes Mae Jemison remarkable is that she made those dreams come true.  Jemison always wanted to be some kind of scientist, but her teachers thought she meant being a nurse, because people like her didn’t have jobs like that.  When others thought her dreams were silly, she worked even harder.  If someone told her she couldn’t do it, she was going to prove them wrong.  Her enemies motivated her to be better.  It took many years, but eventually she reached her goal.  When Jemison graduated from Morgan Park High School, she chose to attend Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.  In college she had to stand out and prove herself to be apart of chemical engineering.  She graduated from Stanford University in 1977, at the age of twenty.
Mae Jemison is a brave person because she fought her fears.  “She knew the astronaut training program was going to be an extraordinary challenge, both mentally and physically.  One of the things she had to conquer was her dislike of heights, especially if she wanted to fly into space!”  It was hard, but eventually she became fearless of heights. Jemison has always been an independent woman.  She entered herself into a great college, achieved her goal to become a scientist, and conquered her fears.  Jemison can do anything she puts her mind to. Mae Jemison is one remarkable person.  She is extraordinary because of what she did and how she did it.  I think Jemison is a great role model, and everyone should look up to a person like her.
